Single Serving: The Klaxons - "Gravity's Rainbow (Soulwax remix)"

This column examines a song - old or new, neurotic or belligerent, classic or indie-tastic. It's got "the buzz", it gives eargasms and it's freakin' awesome.

Cast your mind back to 2006 - Saddam Hussein is sentenced to death, Brokeback Mountain wins for Best Picture and
Italy simulate their way past the Socceroos to claim the World Cup (still dirty).

In March of that year, The Klaxons released their debut single to critical and commercial success.  The bouncing basslines, furious drums and multi-tracked shouts of "we'll travel to infinity" became the anthem of what NME dubbed the 'Nu Rave' along with bands like CSS and Hot Chip.  However, it did encourage people to dress like this, which is most unfortunate.

I don't recall exactly where i stumbled upon this remix by the Belgian mash-up maestros, (Candy's Apartment?  Hype Machine?) , but my brain has certainly not recovered fully since:

Soulwax transform the original bassline into a tortured synth part and adds some LCD Soundsystem-style cowbell percussion, preserving the original vocals. After 3 minutes, it's all going along nicely enough - then it starts getting nasty.  The crescendo makes a beeline to your dopamine pathway before the climax does otherworldly things to your brain for the next minute.

To me, this is an incredible remix because it does 3 things:
          1.  it preserves the energy and the character of the original

          2.  it creatively re-interprets the musical elements and
          3.  it causes incessant head-bopping and a guaranteed eargasm

As with similar experiences of the -gasm variety, it might not do it for you, but give it a go - headphones will heighten the experience significantly!
