The Live Feed: Hangover Pho in Chatswood

I believe that hangovers are highly underrated. They provide a suitable fuzziness of mind to browse JB Hi-Fi, try on flannel shirts and listen to LCD Soundsystem. It is also accompanied by an ill feeling in the stomach which, in turn, provides opportunity to search out food which will hopefully ease the pain.

This is the situation i found myself a couple of weekends ago. After sinking a few too many beers at Britpop, i found myself craving some new music DVDs and a bowl of steaming pho.

I made the trip to JB Hi Fi and was pleasantly surprised to find that all DVDs were 20% off. Subsequently, i was able to buy the most recent DVD releases from Blur and The White Stripes (reviews to come!) for a tidy sum of $32.

Afterward, i made my way to Golden Bo Chinese/Vietnamese Restaurant. I had previously browsed the restaurant and the menu, which was ramshackle-looking enough to convince me that it would serve some tasty Vietnamese fare.

I ordered the special combination pho. The requisite plate of bean sprouts, lemon, fresh chillies and Thai basil come out first, along with squeezy bottles of Hoisin sauce and Sriracha-style chilli sauce.

The pho arrives - i begin the all important garnishing ritual before digging in. The bowl is rich with pieces of tripe, beef balls, tendon and thin slices of beef, all of which i dunk into the hoisin/chilli combo. The rice noodles swim in a fragrant beef broth, spiked with the flavour of the fresh chilli, thai basil and lemon.

Finally, the hangover began to subside as i left the restaurant, tummy soothed and pho craving satisfied.

Now, my dear reader... what is your favourite hangover food and/or hangover activity? Please post below!

  1. Ultimately, Chenga, the answer to your weary-eyed questioning lies in the type of hangover from which one is suffering...

    !. The Even-Sunlight-Hurts Brain Basher:
Easy!! An OPORTO Big Bondi Burger and a 600ml Coke and a really shitty DVD.

    2. The Tequila Was Too Cheap And Is No Longer My Friend:
A possible venture out to a film that requires feminine vulnerability (which is present in spades due to our Mexican friend last night) and a hunt in Chinatown for either MAMAK (15 Goulburn St, Haymarket Ph: 9211 1668) a scarily authentic Indian Malay Roti House that ex-pat Malaysians line up for for over an hour - get the Roti Canai and Kari Kambing (together they translate as Food Heaven) ...OR.... CHINESE NOODLE HOUSE (8 Quay St, Haymarket‎ Ph: 9281 4508‎) the not-so-secret-anymore treasure tucked away in the back streets of Chinatown. Order heaps of the house-made dumplings, cucumber salad and the boiled house-made noodles while you wait out the front and they'll be there when you sit down.

    3. The 8 Too Many Beers Watching The Footy Fog:
EMMA'S ON LIBERTY (59 Liberty St, Enmore Ph: 9550 3458) Quite simply amazing Lebanese food. As close as home made as a restaurant can get and trust worthy enough you can eat the Kibbi Nayeh (Raw lamb and cracked wheat) if it's available and you'd better pray that it is. Take some friends and/or family there, otherwise it aint a true Leb experience.

    4. The 1 Too Many Glasses Of Good Wine Blear:
Half a dozen oysters, some house-made pate and a few more glasses of bloody fantastic wine at ELEVEN KITCHEN AND CELLAR (11 Lime Street, King Street Wharf Ph: 9290 3500). This very, very well kept secret of the Mac banker-wankers puts out some of the best food in the city thanks to Jeff Schroeter (also Sydney preeminent oyster expert) and sitting up the very end of King Street Wharf you can enjoy the stunning view without the painful drag that is Cockle Bay's tourist-trap.

  2. For me it's normally Subway.
Yep. My answer wasn't nearly as intricately detailed as the one above. Meanwhile, that White Stripes doco is awesome.

  3. - Arab!!
I've only just started this thing, but i think you've already won the award for most comprehensive post comment of the decade.
I've been meaning to get to Mamak - always a line there! Chinese Noodle Restaurant is a fave - amazing cheap eat!
I go to Jasmin's in Lakemba when i can - Emma's could be the go next Enmore gig!

    - Simon (i presume!)
My fave subway is the Big Mac imposter - Steak and Cheese with Chipotle SW dressing and the relevant salads.
Haven't watched the Stripes' doco yet, but looking forward to searing guitar solos and awkward psuedo-sibling moments.
